IMMUNIZATION CAMPAIGNS
Measles-Rubella Vaccine introduction Campaign – 4th February to 13th February 2026
Measles is a highly infectious viral disease caused by the measles virus, while Rubella, also highly infectious, is caused by the rubella virus. They are both spread through contact with nose and throat secretions in airborne droplets released when an infected person sneezes or coughs. They have similar symptoms of fever and a maculo-papular rash, with measles being characterized by the additional symptoms of the 3 C’s – cough, conjunctivitis and catarrh. While Rubella infection may seem to be milder than measles, complications result in debilitating outcomes on both mother and child, causing deafness, blindness, alongside neural and heart abnormalities. These viral infections are an important cause of disability and sometimes death, among young children globally.
The Federal Government through the Coordinating Ministry of Health & Social Welfare planned the introduction of the combined measles, rubella vaccine for October 2025 (Phase 1) and then February 2026.
MNCHW CAMPAIGNS – 1ST ROUND: 3RD JUNE TO 7TH JUNE, 2026
The Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Week (MNCHW) Campaigns are usually held twice every year during May-June in the first round and then November-December in the secound round. The goal of MNCHW has always been to deliver a package of high impact but low cost child survival and maternal interventions which include vitamin A and iron folate supplementation, de-worming, nutrition screening, birth registration, malaria prevention, antenatal care, family planning services, HIV/AIDs testing and counseling, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, health education on key family/household practices including breast feeding and hand washing, immunization against childhood illnesses and screening for other diseases.
It is a complimentary approach which does not replace but rather leverages on existing routine activities to provide advanced health care service delivery. The first round of MNCHW this year took place from the 3rd to 7th June, 2026.
MASS DISTRIBUTION CAMPAIGN OF INSECTICIDE-TREATED NETS (ITN)Â 22nd June 2026 -
Malaria is endemic throughout Nigeria, with an estimated 97% of the population at risk with ransmission of the disease occuring all year round making it a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Significant efforts have been made to reduce the prevalence and impact of the disease through the National Malaria Elimination Program and State Malaria Elimination Program efforts in the country.
Scaling up of proven interventions, including the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) as the main intervention for malaria vector control has given rise to several campaigns of mass distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs). The most recent campaign was supported by a multi-stakeholder and development partner collaboration. The official state flag-off was hosted by the Executive Chairman of Nsit Ubium local government on the 22nd of June, 2026.
