The primary responsibility of the directorate of Community Health services is to ensure that all citizens have access to comprehensive primary health care services, offering a seamless continuity of care on a personalised basis with special emphasis on health promotion/education and disease prevention rather than cure.

The directorate of Community Health services has the following functions:

  • Coordination and supervision of community health activities in the state.
  • Promotion and management of nutrition services.
  • Collection, collation and analysis of data on malaria from PHC facilities
  • Capacity building on malaria programs for PHC providers and communities
  • Development and adaptation of maternal, new-born and child health and other community health policies and guidelines.
  • Promotion of reproductive health and family planning services including Emergency Transport Scheme.
  • Promotion of PHC services at schools and proper community engagement through the traditional system.
  • Promotion and management of integrated management of childhood illnesses
  • Promotion and management of water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives in the state
  • Implementation of malaria programs in collaboration with relevant partners in PHC facilities and community levels

In carrying out these functions it must meet the standards set in the Ward Minimum Health Care Package.

Uduak Akpan

Uduak Akpan serves as the  Director, Community Health Services Department at the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency (AKSPHCDA).

She is a Registered Nurse and Midwife with 26 years of experience in Primary Health Care service delivery and management in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She holds a Higher National Diploma in Public Health Nursing from school of health technology Calabar, a Bachelor of Nursing Science from the University of Calabar, and an Advanced Management Certification from the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).
