The directorate of disease control and immunization is charged with managing all disease surveillance and control, and immunization activities in the state. The directorate’s activities typically involve the following:
- Coordinating and managing of outbreaks of epidemics in collaboration with other key stakeholders.
- Coordinating all Immunization activities in the state
- Coordinating sentinel surveillance activities and provision of technical support to LGAs on disease surveillance.
- Management of collation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of disease surveillance data.
- Implementation of HIV/AIDS programs in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in PHC facilities and community level.
- Distribution of TBL control drugs to all DOTs centres at PHCs.
- Contact tracing of TB patients at PHC and community level.
- Distribution of consumables such as ARV and test kits to PHC facilities and communities.
- Capacity building of healthcare workers at PHCs on disease programs including HIV/AIDS, TB, Onchocerciasis.
- Inspection of licensed premises/isolation units to abate and prevent the spread of infectious diseases and other health hazards.
Collection, collation and analysis of data from Primary Health Centres and communities on onchocerciasis programs.
Dr. David Umoh
Dr. David Umoh serves as the State Immunization Officer and Director of Disease Control and Immunization at the Akwa Ibom State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (AKSPHCDA), where he provides strategic leadership for immunization programming and disease surveillance across the state's 31 Local Government Areas.
A fully registered and licensed General Medical Practitioner with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, he brings over two decades of clinical practice and public health administration experience to the role, underpinned by a strong record of integrity, sound judgement, and commitment to organizational and public health objectives.
